Thousands of Pridnestrovians stood up to defend Pridnestrovie in 1992. They served in the ranks of the guards, Cossacks and militias. Then 22-year-old Vadim Kravchuk signed up as a volunteer in the Rybnitsa Guard. 30 years ago, the current deputy of the Supreme Council was a participant in the defense of Dubossary.
The protection of the young republic was provided on the basis of great patriotism, the deputy says. He remembers how at first the defense in the Kochiery area was held by three of us, then the militias came, there were not enough weapons, there were only rifle machines and a couple of grenade launchers.
The defenders died again at the Rogovskaya road junction a little later, on March 14. The armed forces of Moldova tried to cut the Tiraspol-Kamenka highway again in order to divide Pridnestrovie into two parts, using military equipment. 9 Pridnestrovians were killed, more than 20 were injured during the battle. A stele was erected at the tragic site in memory of them.
A post was placed at the Rogovskaya road junction after the bloody March events so that there would be no more attempts to block the republican highway, says Vadim Kravchuk. Guardsmen and militias from Rybnitsa controlled the perimeter then.
The Pridnestrovian defenders took up a position behind Rogi then, where Vadim Kravchuk was wounded like many of his colleagues at the end of May 1992. There were also those who died.
Next was the battle for Bendery, one of the bloodiest in the armed aggression of Moldova against Pridnestrovie.
The military events of 1992 claimed the lives of more than 800 Pridnestrovians. The bloodshed on the Dniester was stopped by Russian peacekeepers. The armed conflict ended on the 1st of August. This date is celebrated as the Day of Remembrance of the fallen and deceased defenders of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic.
The memory of the tragic days of 1990-1992, as well as the unceasing sorrow, will forever remain in the hearts of Pridnestrovians. Mourning events are held throughout the country every year. Heroes are remembered in every family, and this memory is passed on to the younger generation.
