The 90th anniversary of the birth of the first cosmonaut, Hero of the Soviet Union Yuri Gagarin was marked on the 9th of March. Deputy of the Supreme Council Ilona Tyuryaeva together with residents of Tiraspol and activists of the Renewal Republican party laid flowers at the monument to the legendary man in Tiraspol, according to the party's website.
April 12, 1961 is the date of the first human spaceflight. Students of the Tiraspol School No. 5 were among the first to pick up a communication session of the Vostok-1 spacecraft with the Mission Control Center that day. The Guards fighter aviation regiment, belonging to the Odessa Military District, was based in Tiraspol in Soviet times. Future cosmonaut pilots served in this unit. Many enterprises in Tiraspol were associated with the development of the space industry.
A large banner with the image of Yuri Gagarin appeared in the capital, a drawing contest "Towards the Stars" was held, and a photo album "The Road to the Stars" was published by the 60th anniversary of the first space flight in 2021, which tells how Pridnestrovian settlements are connected with the development of cosmonautics.
