15.02.2024

The heroes of the Afghan war are remembered in Pridnestrovie. The last Soviet soldier left the territory of Afghanistan exactly 35 years ago, on February 15, 1989. Flowers were laid at the Memorial of Glory in Tiraspol, at the monument to internationalist soldiers by the President of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic Vadim Krasnoselsky, Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic Alexander Korshunov and Vice-Speaker Galina Antyufeyeva, Chairman of the Government of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic Alexander Rosenberg, as well as the First President of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic Igor Smirnov, head of the capital administration Oleg Dovgopol, representatives of ministries and departments of the republic, internationalist soldiers and members of their families.

All 14 Tiraspol residents who died in Afghanistan were remembered at the Memorial of Glory in the capital on the Day of Remembrance and Glory of Internationalist Soldiers. Their names are carved in granite at the foot of the monument to a Soviet soldier in Afghanistan.

The memory of the fallen and deceased internationalist warriors and everyone who gave their lives defending the Fatherland, including being far beyond its borders, was honored with a minute of silence. A military salute sounded in honor of the defenders, who remained young forever.

13 thousand Soviet soldiers and officers died there, defending the interests of the Soviet Union during the entire time that the Afghan war continued. The Pridnestrovian land lost 54 people in it.

About one and a half thousand Afghan soldiers live in the republic today. It is difficult to give an exact figure. Every month they leave from the consequences of battle wounds, concussions and illnesses. Debate continues about whether it was necessary to send Soviet soldiers there even though 35 years after the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan. The internationalist soldiers themselves are confident that they fulfilled their duty with honor.

Each city and region of Pridnestrovie has its own public organization of Afghan soldiers. All of them are united into one Association of Veterans of the War in Afghanistan. It has been headed for many years by parliamentarian and a former participant in the war in Afghanistan Igor Buga. Internationalist soldiers actively participate in the public life of the republic. They provide support to the families of the victims, engage in military-patriotic education of children and youth, and conduct lessons in courage. They participate in organizing exhibitions and work in other areas, the main task of which is the continuity of generations and nurturing love for the Motherland.
