The last column of Soviet troops left Afghanistan on the 15th of February, 1989. Meeting in memory of this event was held at the Memorial of Glory in Tiraspol. It was attended by Vice Speaker of the Supreme Council Galina Antyufeeva and Chairman of the Pridnestrovian Association of Veterans of the War in Afghanistan, Chairman of the Committee on Education, Public Associations and the Media Igor Buga.
14 persons out of those 54 who dead were residents of Tiraspol. A minute of silence was declared and a military salute was given in memory of them. February 15 will forever be remembered as a sad day for widows, children and mothers. However, they fulfilled their duty to the country with honor, despite the losses.
About one and a half thousand Afghan soldiers live in the republic now. It is difficult to name the exact figure, Igor Buga said. Every month, the internationalist warriors leave. They die from the consequences of battle wounds, shell shock and disease.
Today, on a memorable day for every Afghan, to the monument to the sons of the Fatherland - the soldiers of the Afghan war of 1979-1989. Flowers were laid down from those who fought in Afghanistan, and those who lost loved ones there. A wreath was laid on behalf of the PMR President Vadim Krasnoselsky by Minister of Defense Oleg Obruchkov.
