A monument to Engineer Soldiers was opened today in the village of Parkany, Slobodzeya district. The ceremony was timed to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the transition of the 115th engineer-sapper battalion of the 14th Army under the command of Colonel Igor Dudkevich under the jurisdiction of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic. The monument commemorates the history of the battalion, which was formed 80 years ago, in the early years of the Great Patriotic War. His battle path stretched for 10000 kilometers from the Caucasus Mountains to Austria.
A battalion of the People's Militia was formed on the basis of the engineer-sapper battalion in the summer of 1992, at the peak of Moldova's armed aggression against Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic. The servicemen held the defense along the left bank of the Dniester on a line of 20 kilometers. The personnel of the battalion participated in breaking through the defenses across the bridge to the city of Bendery. The necessary assistance was provided to the refugees and the wounded. The servicemen carried out round-the-clock commandant service on the bridge across the Dniester near the village of Parkany, 26 of them died in the line of duty.
The event was attended from the side of the Parliament by the Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic Alexander Korshunov and the parliamentarian for "Parkany" constituency No.24 Ivan Nedelkov.
The opening of the monument to the soldiers-sappers considers the deputy of the Supreme Council Ivan Nedelkov to be the right and important decision. The infrastructure of the unit has been updated by the anniversary date – caserns location, a gym, a canteen.
Archbishop Sawa of Tiraspol and Dubossary held a litia for the dead soldiers and a ceremony of consecrating the monument. The participants of the event laid flowers at the monument then.
The First President of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic Igor Smirnov expressed his gratitude for the memory of the feat of the engineer battalion.
Mourning events are traditionally held in memory of the fallen sappers on June 21, at the Memorial of Military Glory in the village of Parkany. Representatives of the authorities, relatives and friends of the heroes, their colleagues and military personnel lay flowers at the monument.
