The system of obtaining citizenship for Pridnestrovians may be simplified in the Russian Federation

17.12.2020

The system of obtaining Russian passports for Pridnestrovians can be simplified. The point is that all Pridnestrovians, even those with citizenships of other countries, can obtain Russian citizenship, and that documents are accepted through the consulate in Tiraspol. The State Duma of the Russian Federation is already dealing with this issue and hopes that it will be resolved through a presidential decree, the Kommersant Russian newspaper writes following the visit to Moscow of the PMR President Vadim Krasnoselsky.

Not all Pridnestrovians can draw up documents for obtaining Russian citizenship at the moment, but only those who do not have citizenship of another state, or those who permanently reside in the territory of the Russian Federation.

The State Duma of Russia in July 2020 adopted amendments to the law "On Russian Citizenship". According to the new changes, foreign citizens can become Russians without renouncing their previously acquired citizenship of another state. But the changes affected only those who have been married to Russian living in Russia for at least three years. As well as those who studied in Russia after July 1, 2002, and those who work in the Russian Federation for at least a year before applying for citizenship or have at least one parent with Russian citizenship living in Russia. Unfortunately, many Pridnestrovians do not fall under such conditions.

Konstantin Zatulin, special representative of the State Duma of the Russian Federation on migration and citizenship, told Kommersant that he raised the issue of simplifying the procedure for obtaining citizenship for Pridnestrovians in a letter sent to Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin and Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova.
