In memory of the feat of internationalist soldiers

17.02.2025

The memory of internationalist soldiers was honored in Tiraspol on the 15th of February. The withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan was completed on this day 36 years ago.

Veterans of the Afghan war, deputies of the Supreme Council of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic Igor Buga and Sergey Cheban, representatives of government bodies, security agencies, public organizations and residents of the capital gathered in the center of Tiraspol. The veterans marched in a column along the central square of the city to the Glory Memorial to the sounds of a military orchestra to pay tribute to their comrades in arms. Pupils of the Republican Cadet Corps carried portraits of their fellow countrymen who died in Afghanistan. Standards with the names of the cities in which military operations took place were carried by servicemen of the Armed Forces of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic. More than 2000 Pridnestrovians went through the Afghan war, 54 of whom did not return home. 27 veterans died defending Pridnestrovie in 1992. Their feat will forever remain in history.

A rally was held at the Glory Memorial, after a minute of silence, the participants of the memorial ceremony laid flowers at the monument to the Afghan soldier. Veterans of the war in Afghanistan shared with journalists memories of their comrades in arms, the difficulties of service in Afghanistan, the trials they experienced and how these events influenced their future lives. The Afghans told the younger generation about the brotherhood of soldiers, the exploits of their comrades in arms and the importance of preserving the memory of those who did not return home.

One of the main tasks that veterans set for themselves is to pass on historical memory and educate the younger generation in the spirit of patriotism. Resident of Tiraspol Vladimir Akopov, having fulfilled his international duty, returned home in March 1984. He carries out educational work years later, he comes to meetings with young people annually on the day of remembrance of internationalist soldiers and talks about the events of the Afghan war, about the exploits of his comrades in arms, about the value of soldierly brotherhood. Such meetings help the younger generation to better understand history and realize at what price peace was won. The memory of internationalist soldiers is carefully preserved and passed on to future generations. Pridnestrovians gather every year on this day at memorials and monuments to honor the memory of those who honorably fulfilled their duty.
