In memory of the feat of the first cosmonaut

The first flight into space, which took place 62 years ago, is of great importance for all mankind, and for the Pridnestrovian capital – Tiraspol as well. Activists of “The Obnovlenie” (Renewal) Republican political party are confident in this and annually confirm the importance of this great event. Ilona Tyuryaeva, a member of the central council of the “The Obnovlenie” Republican political party, Deputy of the Supreme Council of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic, oversees many social and cultural projects. Among them there are events dedicated to the Day of Cosmonautics. The 11-meter colorful banner with the image of the world's first cosmonaut appeared on Gagarin Boulevard in Tiraspol two years ago. The banner was placed on the facade of one of the residential buildings on Sverdlov Street. Both adults and children come to be photographed against the backdrop of a smiling Yuri Gagarin. There has been a bust of the astronaut since 1977, who was the first to fly into space on the other side of October 25 Street, next to building number 1 of the Pridnestrovian State University. Fresh flowers lay down at the monument today.

The parliamentarian recalled that many Tiraspol enterprises were associated with the development of the space industry. Local radio amateurs, students of the Tiraspol city vocational school number 5, listening to the air on April 12, 1961, were among the first to "catch" the communication session of the Vostok-1 spacecraft with the Mission Control Center. The educational institution subsequently began to bear the name of the astronaut. The Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment, which belonged to the Odessa Military District, was based in the city in Soviet times. Future cosmonauts served in this unit. Deputies of the Tiraspol City Council on April 12, 1961, within two hours after the launch of the Vostok-1 spacecraft with Yuri Gagarin on board from Baikonur, gathered for an extraordinary session and decided to rename Sportivny Boulevard in honor of the world's first cosmonaut.

The Space Run was held for the first time - a mass sports event that brought together more than 200 participants on the eve of Cosmonautics Day, over the weekend, in Tiraspol, with the active participation of “The Obnovlenie” (Renewal) Republican political party. Activists of the youth wing of the party took part in the Star Dictation "Let's go!" today. This international humanitarian event of Rossotrudnichestvo provided an opportunity to test knowledge about space and learn new things about the exploration of the expanses of the Universe.
