Fresh flowers were laid at the monument to the liquidators of the Chernobyl accident at the capital's Memorial of Glory. Participants in those events, Tiraspol residents, activists of the Renewal party, as well as deputies of the Supreme Council Galina Antyufeyeva and Ilona Tyuryaeva gathered here on the Day of Remembrance for Victims of Radiation Accidents and Disasters. They came to honor the memory of the participants in the liquidation of the consequences of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
The world faced one of the worst man-made disasters in its history 38 years ago. An explosion occurred in the reactor of the fourth power unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant at 01:24 on April 26, 1986 local time, which became the beginning of a tragic chapter in the history of mankind. Chernobyl has become a household name.
The tragedy of April 26 divided the world into “before” and “after”. As the Pridnestrovian historical portal writes, the cloud formed throughout most of Europe from the burning reactor spread various radioactive materials, primarily iodine and cesium radionuclides. The greatest fallout occurred in large areas of the Soviet Union located near the reactor and now included in the territories of Belarus, the Russian Federation and Ukraine. Significant resources, including human resources, were mobilized to eliminate the consequences of the accident. Between 1986 and 1990, approximately 240 thousand people – military and civilian specialists from all over the Soviet Union – took part in the work to eliminate the consequences of the accident. There were 1837 Pridnestrovians among them. According to the Unified State Social Insurance Fund, there are now 266 liquidators of the Chernobyl accident living in the republic.
Military personnel of the 14th Guards Army, workers and specialists from enterprises and factories, doctors and nurses went to the accident site in Pripyat from Pridnestroviancities and villages from the first days of the radiation disaster. The liquidators still suffer from serious illnesses; many have died due to radiation sickness, cancer, and high doses of radiation. The feat of the participants in the liquidation of the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster will remain forever in our memory as an example of selfless self-sacrifice and unbending will.
