Deputy of the Supreme Council of the II and III convocations Mikhail Katkov passed away at the age of 80. Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic Alexander Korshunov on behalf of the Supreme Council expressed deep condolences in connection with the untimely death of the statesman and public figure of Pridnestrovie.

Mikhail Yuzefovich Katkov was born in 1945. He is Ukrainian by nationality. He graduated from the Chisinau State University named after Lenin with a degree in history and social science teaching (1982). He began his career in 1963 as an electrician. He worked as an electrician at the Moldavskaya State District Power Plant after being discharged into the reserve, then was elected as a released secretary of the Komsomol committee. He served in the ranks of the USSR Armed Forces from 1970 to 1991. He performed international duty in Afghanistan. Military rank – colonel. From 1991 to 1995 – Chief of Staff of the Civil Defense of the Bendery Auto Repair Plant, then Chief Specialist of the City Civil Defense Staff. He was elected in 1990 as a deputy of the Supreme Council of the Moldavian SSR. He prematurely terminated these powers due to disagreement with the nationalist policy pursued by the Moldovan leadership in June 1992. 

Mikhail Yuzefovich Katkov was elected to parliament in December 1995 – he was a deputy of the Chamber of Legislators of the Supreme Council of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic, deputy chairman of the Committee on Security and Defense in the II and III convocations. Mikhail Katkov was among those who contributed to the history of Pridnestrovian parliamentarism: he took part in strengthening the foundations of the state system and creating the foundation of the republic's socio-economic base. The II and III convocations of the Supreme Council were remembered for the adoption of constitutional laws, codes and other fundamental documents. 

Mikhail Katkov headed the Pridnestrovian Association of Veterans of the War in Afghanistan in 1998. He had been since 2014 honorary member of the Presidium of this public association.
