The Women’s Union of the City of Bendery public organization was created 30 years ago, in 1994. The Bendery residents united much earlier however: back in the late 1980s. The women participated in rallies and strikes, defended their rights to live and work in their native land, and to speak their native language.
The women of Bendery took part in the “rail war” in 1991. They blocked the railway at the Tiraspol station, calling on the Moldovan authorities to release the top officials of the young Pridnestrovian state together with activists from other cities of the republic. The Moldovan prosecutor's office opened criminal cases against activists of the movement, and there were provocations, but the women of Pridnestrovie achieved their goal.
The women did not leave their hometown in 1992, when active hostilities against Pridnestrovie began. They helped the wounded, prepared food for the defenders, and reported on the situation in nearby villages. The women of Bendery played a major role in breaking the information blockade. They traveled to Moscow, where they met with labor collectives, members of the Government, and city leadership, and told the truth about the events taking place in the republic.
The Women's Union of the city of Bendery has just over two dozen people today. All of them are full of strength and desire to participate in the socio-political life of their country. The plans are to create a museum to preserve the historical memory of the events of the 1990s that took place in Bendery for future generations of Pridnestrovians.
