Keeping Memory in the Heart: Anniversary of the "Memory" Republican Union

27.05.2025

A ceremonial meeting in honor of the 30th anniversary of the "Union "Memory" Republican public organization was held in the City Palace of Culture in Tiraspol. Deputy of the Committee on Education, Science, Culture, Public Associations, Sports, Information and Youth Policy Oleg Vasilaty congratulated the public figures on behalf of the Supreme Council of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic.

The parliamentarian read out a welcoming address from the Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic.

The Memory Unions in each city of Pridnestrovie began working immediately after the end of hostilities in 1992. Pridnestrovian activists united in such organizations to support the families of soldiers killed in the battles for Pridnestrovie and the families of deceased civilians, to preserve their memory and carry it through the years, telling the truth about how Pridnestrovians defended their right to independence and what its price was.

The regional Memory Unions united into a republican organization in 1995. Tamara Gorbacheva has been heading it for 30 years. Families who lost their loved ones in the early 1990s can seek help – both legal and material. The "Memory" Union actively participates in legislative activities so that help comes to families from the state.

Families of the deceased defenders of Pridnestrovie receive medical care on preferential terms, Tamara Gorbacheva said. Currently, the organization includes 300 families of combatants who died in the early 1990s during the armed conflict, and 300 families of defenders who subsequently died from wounds received in combat. The head of the union shared that the hardest thing was to see the name of a loved one in the list of the dead. Tamara Gorbacheva lost her son in 1992. He died in battles to defend the city of Bendery.

Tamara Gorbacheva and the head of the Tiraspol branch of the Union Valentina Tolstenko were awarded the Order of Honor for the 30th anniversary of the Union "Memory" for active public work and many years of conscientious work, by Decree of the President of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic. Activists of the Union "Memory" were presented with state awards and badges.
