University graduates who received education at the expense of the state budget must work for several years in state organizations under current legislation. This rule will also apply to residency graduates. The relevant amendments to the law "On Education" were adopted by the Supreme Council on the 2nd of March. The law was signed by the PMR President Vadim Krasnoselsky.
If we talk about the introduction of the residency itself instead of the internship, then this idea belonged to the PMR President. The main goal is for future doctors to study medical specialties in more depth. The idea was supported by the Supreme Council last year. The first set of residents has been studying at the Medical Faculty of the Pridnestrovian State University since September 2021.
Residents get more theory and practice, they say at the medical faculty. 26 directions in residency have been opened since the 1st of September. Currently, 15 more are being developed, which will be introduced from the next academic year. Epidemiology, general hygiene, neurosurgery, endocrinology are among the new specialties.
Residents practice in all state medical institutions. They receive a job assignment after graduation. The republic provides budgetary places in order to receive demanded medical personnel for this.
The introduction of a new form of training doctors is supported by the students themselves. Sergei Melnichenko is a sixth year student at the Faculty of Medicine. In the future, he wants to become an ophthalmologist. There is such a direction in residency.
Residents who study for free enter into an agreement on mandatory work in state medical institutions under the new law. The procedure for fulfilling the contract and the terms of working off will be established by the Government.
There are 150 state-funded places at the Faculty of Medicine in total, 120 of them "Medical business". The number increased last year on behalf of the President. Young professionals after training can participate in the state program for receiving subsidies for the purchase of housing. This is one of the measures to support public sector employees. The problem of shortage of personnel in the health care system is acute in the republic. The issue continues to be worked out jointly by the head of state, the Supreme Council and the Government.
