Dikul Island is located in Slobodzeya region on the northern border of the flooded ecosystem of the Dniester delta, in the lower part of the Turunchuk river basin. It is the largest river island in Europe. The entire territory of the reserve is about 170 hectares. The area is part of natural areas of international importance. Rare species of animals and birds are well preserved here due to the inaccessibility of the tract and its remoteness from large settlements. The creation of the state reserve "Dikul" will allow the unique area to be included in the number of specially protected zones of the reserve fund of the republic.
A territory valuable in scientific and environmental significance will now be taken under state protection. This will make it possible to protect it from the influence of modern civilization. In addition, the creation of the state sanctuary will support the existence of reproductive populations of rare species of animals and plants in our republic, many of which are included in the “Red Books” of the PMR, Moldova and Ukraine.
The project of the reserve "Dikul" was developed by the Pridnestrovian State University. The university received a positive environmental impact assessment from the State Service for Environmental Control and Environmental Protection.
