18.06.2025

The current generation of Pridnestrovians faces the task of passing on to their children and grandchildren the memory of the historical path of Pridnestrovie, as well as the customs, culture and values of the peoples of Pridnestrovie. This was the topic of the Chairman of the Supreme Council Alexander Korshunov in the course of the ceremonial meeting held in the Supreme Council in honor of the Year of the Pridnestrovian People. The meeting was preceded by the anthem of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic, which was performed in Russian, Moldovan and Ukrainian. The history of Pridnestrovie began not in 1990, but thousands of years ago, they said at the meeting. The Dniester River attracted different peoples with their culture. There was a civilizational, cultural exchange between nomadic tribes, invaders and the local population, the region developed economically for many centuries, noted Alexander Korshunov. The Strategy for the Development of Pridnestrovie sets out the state idea, one of the basic elements of which is to continue the development of the community of the "Pridnestrovian people", which includes representatives of various nationalities, ethnic groups and is based on the preservation of languages, cultures, customs and traditions. Pridnestrovians have learned to live together and protect common values despite the differences in language, customs and culture. This uniqueness of the people of the republic was voiced by Advisor to the Chairman of the Supreme Council on Foreign Policy and International Relations Sergei Shirokov, outlining excerpts from a report dedicated to the Year of the Pridnestrovian People. The report was developed on the instructions of the President of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic Vadim Krasnoselsky.

Moldavians fleeing Ottoman oppression, Russian and Ukrainian settlers, German colonists, Jews, Bulgarians seeking freedom, and Armenians flocked to the Pridnestrovian region. Catherine II granted them land and the right to live according to their customs, it was said at the ceremonial meeting.

The First World War and the collapse of the Russian Empire. A major milestone in the history of our republic is the Great Patriotic War, the years of fighting fascism and the occupation of Pridnestrovian cities. It was noted at the meeting that the Soviet Union in the last century had to fight not only with Germany in fact, but with almost all of Europe, with the exception of some countries. 27 million Soviet people died. The 4-year-long path to Victory was marked by dozens of strategic operations, including the defense of the Brest Fortress, Odessa, the Battle of Smolensk, the Battle of Leningrad, the defense of Sevastopol, etc. Pridnestrovians who lived under fascist occupation until the spring of 1944 resisted Nazi ideology, hid innocent people, and waged underground and partisan struggle. This is another important factor in Pridnestrovian identity. The leadership of the Supreme Council, deputies and staff of the parliamentary apparatus honored the memory of those who died during the Great Patriotic War with a minute of silence.

September 2, 1990 is the starting point of modern Pridnestrovian statehood. Pridnestrovie was formed by the will of the people, who wanted to preserve the opportunity to speak their native language, including Moldovan, Russian and Ukrainian. The Pridnestrovians had to defend the young republic in the first years of its existence.

The armed conflict of 1992 was discussed at the ceremonial meeting. The bloodiest battles began on June 19. Moldovan armed formations entered Bender and intensified military actions against the civilian population despite the signed ceasefire agreement. Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Education, Public Associations and Mass Media Andrei Safonov, a witness to those tragic events, spoke in the plenary session hall.

People of 72 ethnic groups, nationalities live in Pridnestrovie today. Russian, Moldovan and Ukrainian are the official languages in the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic. The Chairman of the Supreme Council called for the unification of efforts by all sectors of society to strengthen the unity of the Pridnestrovian people, educate the youth in the spirit of patriotism and respect for the older generation and preserve the uniqueness of Pridnestrovie. A film prepared by the press service of the Supreme Council was shown in the meeting room at the end of the meeting dedicated to the Year of the Pridnestrovian People. The film "1941 - 1945: The Path of the Victors" tells about the goal of the fascists – to destroy the Slavs. There should have been only two races in Europe according to Hitler and his supporters: Latin and German. The Soviet Union destroyed this ideology at the cost of the lives of 27 million dead. The film demonstrates the main stages of the struggle of the Soviet people with fascist Germany. The task of the descendants of the victors is at present to defend the truth about the fight against fascism and the honor of all who made every effort in the name of the Great Victory.
