Bendery recalled the events that took place in the city 31 years ago on April 1. Moldovan nationalists early in the morning with the support of armored personnel carriers shot down a traffic militia patrol car, guardsmen who rushed to their aid and a bus with workers from a cotton-spinning factory. Four Pridnestrovian militiamen took the fight in Sovchoznaya Street. Junior militia sergeant Anatoly Petrov and private Igor Grek died on the spot. Gregory Echin, who continued to lead the rescue operation, was seriously wounded. He spent almost two months in the hospital after that, underwent several complex surgical interventions and died on May 26, 1992. Another militia officer, Sergei Boyko, received numerous gunshot wounds on April 1, 1992, and survived.
The street where the tragedy occurred was named after militia captain Grigory Yechin in the early 2000s. An Orthodox chapel was installed in the same place, at the crossroads where everything happened. Every year she hosts commemorative events.
