Chairman of the Supreme Council Alexander Korshunov met with the US Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Moldova Dereck Hogan (he has held this position since last November). This is the first meeting with the new US Ambassador at the parliament. The vice-speaker of the parliament, the head of the deputy commission on foreign policy and international relations Galina Antyufeyeva, the chairman of the parliamentary committee on education, science and culture Mikhail Burla represented the Pridnestrovian side.
The current US Ambassador graduated from two Universities - Pittsburgh and Princeton. The record of his diplomatic service is quite impressive: Dereck Hogan worked at the US State Department, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Belarus, Russia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Azerbaijan. He speaks Russian and Spanish.
At the beginning of the meeting, the Parliament Speaker Alexander Korshunov noted that despite the fact that in accordance with the Constitution the sphere of foreign policy is within the competence of the head of state and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Supreme Council also has a special interest. According to the head of the legislature, all branches and authorities come out from consolidated positions in the external sphere.
At the same time, the speaker drew the attention of interlocutors to the negativity of the pressure exerted by the Moldovan authorities on Pridnestrovie, the application of various kinds of sanctions and restrictions to both legal entities and individuals. He expressed hope that the United States, which declares adherence to democratic principles, protection of the rights and freedoms of citizens will make significant contribution to the ongoing negotiations in the 5 + 2 format, the process of political settlement of relations between the two banks of the Dniester.
The deputy speaker of the parliament Galina Antyufeyeva dedicated journalists to some aspects of the meeting held in the Supreme Council.
Galina Antyufeyeva noted that any dialogue with foreign representatives, which deputies hold in parliament, is synchronized with the position of the head of state and foreign ministry.
She assured voters that deputies continue to use parliament as an open discussion platform for negotiating with foreign representatives so that the agreements reached during the negotiations are implemented in practice. According to the vice-speaker, the US ambassador assured parliamentarians that he for his part would also do everything possible.
