Tree seedlings were planted in Slobodzeya district

31.03.2023

Hundreds of Populus seedlings, as well as dozens of pines and junipers, were planted in the Slobodzeya region on the banks of the Turunchuk River near river rapids. Deputies of the Supreme Council Oleg Vasilaty, Boris German, Gregory Dyachenko and Sergey Pisarenko took part in the mass event to improve the picturesque place, which is called the Chobruch waterfall.

The Dniester River splits at the edge of the village of Chobruchi: into the main navigable channel and the Turunchuk branch. Local residents say that the main branch of the river began to silt up in the 1920s and 1930s. It was decided in order to raise the water level in the Dniester River and clear its bed from silting to build a dam at the source of the Turunchuk. Large stones were brought in carts from different places, including from the quarry in the village of Bychok, from railway stations.

The dam was completed in 1927, but soon it was partially destroyed by ice drift and carried downstream, forming a cascade of pitfalls. They are clearly visible with a decrease in the water level, as is the foundation of the dam. It turned out a man-made threshold. The rapids are visible when the water is high. People like to come here on the coast of Turunchuk for beautiful photos, go fishing or just relax, admiring nature. The plans of the local authorities to further improve this area of 3.6 hectares. They want to install gazebos, barbecues, arrange parking – all within the framework of the project for the development of recreational areas in cities and regions of the republic. There will be places for waste collection. The work will be carried out in stages as funding increases.

The young trees have been planted this year. The action was organized by the State Service for Environmental Control and Environmental Protection on the occasion of the International Day of Forests. Old poplars stretched along the river bank are flood resistant, they said. Therefore, the participants of the event are sure that the planted trees should take root. They will be looked after by local authorities and residents.
