The path to independence. Pridnestrovie and South Ossetia

19.09.2020

The Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic is 30. South Ossetia will mark the same date on September 20. The deputies, based on the will of the people, determined the path of independent development of both republics 30 years ago. In Pridnestrovie, the decision to create the Pridnestrovian Moldavian SSR was approved by delegates of the II Congress of Deputies of all levels, and in Tskhinval the South Ossetian Soviet Democratic Republic was proclaimed by the Council of People's Deputies of the South Ossetian Autonomous Region.

Both young states have passed the test of war. Then Pridnestrovie and South Ossetia formed statehood in order to give people not only freedom, but also hope for the future and development.

Both states have overcome many obstacles, but they confidently continue to follow the path of their formation.

In 2006, the Chairman of the Supreme Council of the PMR Grigory Marakutsa initiated the creation of the Interparliamentary Assembly of Member States of the Community “For Democracy and the Rights of Peoples”. It includes Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Pridnestrovie. Later, Nagorno-Karabakh (Republic of Artsakh) joined the Interparliamentary Assembly. The states not recognized by the world community have united. The first statement of the Assembly called on the UN countries to recognize the results of the referendums and "build relations with the Republic of Abkhazia, the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic and the Republic of South Ossetia as with independent, sovereign states, subjects of international legal relations".

As part of the work of the Assembly, Deputies of the parliaments of the three republics discussed with their Russian colleagues the possibility of extending the legislation of the Russian Federation with respect to Russian citizens permanently residing in the territory of Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Pridnestrovie.

Pridnestrovie and South Ossetia went through difficult times together. After the war in August 2008, Pridnestrovian rescuers, builders and other specialists went to Tskhinvali to rebuild the destroyed city. Close ties between the republics persist even now. Official representations have been opened in the capitals. The representative of South Ossetia in Pridnestrovie Vitaly Yankovsky meets with the Head of the Pridnestrovian parliament Alexander Korshunov. The Chairman of the PMR Supreme Council attends events related to important historical dates of the Republic of South Ossetia.
