Pridnestrovian deputies oppose the escalation of tension in the region

08.02.2023

The main issue of today's plenary session was the adoption of the statement of the Supreme Council of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic on the threats of escalation of tension and destabilization of the regional security system. The negative trends in the Moldovan-Pridnestrovian negotiation process were discussed with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic Vitaly Ignatiev before unanimously supporting the draft statement.

The deputies of the Supreme Council expressed concern that the active aggressive actions of Moldova could mean its readiness to withdraw from the negotiation process. Vitaly Ignatiev replied that officially Moldova has so far refrained from making such a decision and declares its commitment to dialogue at the negotiating table. However, there has been no full-fledged dialogue between Pridnestrovie and Moldova for several years, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic recalled. Moldova categorically refuses direct dialogue at the highest level from 2021 at the level of the president, parliament or government. The mechanism of the “Permanent Conference…” in the “5+2” format has not been fully functioning for a long time.

The parliamentarians were interested during the discussion of the current situation in the Moldovan-Pridnestrovian negotiation process in whether the adopted changes to the Criminal Code of the Republic of Moldova and their possible consequences contradict the norms of international law.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs replied that he considers the adopted amendments to the Criminal Code of the Republic of Moldova a gross violation of all major international conventions aimed at protecting human rights and freedoms.

The deputies agreed during the discussion that the most correct solution would be to draw attention to the current situation of the international participants in the “5+2” negotiation format. The deputies ask for an assessment of the actions of the Moldovan side in the statement unanimously adopted at the plenary session.

The deputies of the Supreme Council emphasized that Pridnestrovie will continue to adhere to the tactics of exclusively peaceful and constructive dialogue at the negotiating table.

The statement of the Supreme Council will be sent to all participants in the negotiation process in the “5+2” format.
