International uprising of prisoners of the Buchenwald concentration camp, located in Germany took place Exactly 76 years ago, on the 11th of April. The prisoners, having learned about the approach of the allied forces, raised an armed uprising, disarmed and captured about 200 guards. Having seized the leadership of the camp, the Buchenwald prisoners went on the air and managed to transmit the SOS signal. Subsequently, it was on April 11 that the UN approved the International Day for the Liberation of Nazi Concentration Camp Prisoners.
More than 14 thousand concentration camps, ghettos and prisons operated in Nazi Germany and on the territory of the occupied countries. These were the places of the organized systematic murder of millions of people. Auschwitz, Buchenwald, Dachau, Majdanek are the most famous Nazi concentration camps, which housed hundreds of thousands and killed tens of thousands of prisoners.
Concentration camp prisoners who have endured hardships of deprivation and have lost their health enjoy social benefits. Our republic has a law on social protection of war veterans. Former prisoners of concentration camps and ghettos are equated with participants in the war, they are entitled to a 50 percent discount on utility bills and a 50 percent discount on housing fees, they can use all types of public urban transport free of charge and enjoy other benefits.
More than 18 million people passed through the concentration camps during the Second World War, 11 million prisoners were killed. Almost half of them are citizens of the USSR. There were a lot of children. Concentration camps were created on the territory of Pridnestrovie occupied by the fascists in the period from 1941 to 1944. Thousands of people died in them.
The memory of this is kept in the society of former prisoners of fascism every day in Pridnestrovie. Like the whole world Pridnestrovie recalls the horrors of a long past, but unforgotten war every year on the 11th of April.
