April 23, 1992 is one of the tragic dates in Pridnestrovie. That day, members of the Buzhor terrorist group fired at the official car of Nikolai Ostapenko, the Chairman of the Slobodzeya District Council, who was actively fighting for peace on the banks of the Dniester and ardently defended the principles of internationalism. That time he was only 38 years old. An obelisk was erected at the place of the tragedy, the outskirts of the village of Karagash. The leaders of the district, deputies, associates of Nikolai Ivanovich come to honor his blessed memory and lay flowers at the foot of the monument every year on the 23rd of April.
