Father's Parental Leave

18.05.2022

Amendments to the Law of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic "On the status of military personnel", which will allow single fathers or adoptive parents to go on maternity leave for up to three years on an equal basis with women, were considered today and adopted in the first reading by deputies at a plenary session. Changes to the law should apply to contract servicemen who raise a child without a mother. Parliamentarians of the Committee on Legislation, Protection of the Rights and Freedoms of Citizens consider that parental leave for the father (adoptive parent) should be granted not only in the event of death, deprivation of parental rights or abandonment of the child by the mother. The reason should be the stay of the mother in medical organizations for a period of more than three months and in other cases of lack of maternal care. There is no such norm in the law “On the status of military personnel” now.

Oleg Petrik added at present, that such a legislative norm is valid for the civilian population and for those men who serve in other law enforcement agencies of Pridnestrovie. Deputies adopted additions to the law for contracted servicemen in the first reading. Parliamentarians adopted interrelated initiatives in the first reading today: law-in-draft on providing social guarantees to male military personnel who serve in the Armed Forces under a contract and independently raise a child up to three years old, and additions to the Law “On universal military duty and military service”. This document proposes to introduce a rule that expands the list of cases when a serviceman should not be excluded from the lists of personnel of a military unit upon the expiration of his term of service. It is proposed to recognize as such a case being on parental leave until the child reaches the age of three years. Work on law-in-draft will continue in the second reading.
