Parental leave for fathers in uniform

Deputies adopted amendments to several laws at once in the second final reading at the plenary session today. They will allow men who serve in the army to take parental leave for up to three years in the absence of a mother.

Parliamentarians from the Committee on Legislation, Protection of the Rights and Freedoms of Citizens consider that single fathers and adoptive parents who are military personnel should have the opportunity to go on paid leave to care for a child up to three years if necessary on an equal basis with female military personnel. A similar rule applies to both civilians and employees of other law enforcement agencies currently. The exception is still the Armed Forces of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic.

A group of deputies made appropriate changes to the legislation in order to eliminate this social injustice. Parliamentarians consider that fathers in some cases can also apply for parental leave with the preservation of seniority. The changes should affect those who serve under a contract and raise a child without a mother.

According to parliamentarians, the leave to care for a child father or adoptive parent should be provided not only in the event of the death of the mother, deprivation of her parental rights or abandonment of the child. A man can go on vacation even when the mother of the child has been in the hospital for more than six months, for example. The deputies voted in favor of providing social guarantees to male military personnel who serve under a contract and independently raise a child up to three years old in the course of the plenary session today. They will be paid including a monthly allowance.

The legislations will come into force a month after the signing by the President and publication, that is, already this year.
