The world-famous surgeon Nikolai Vasilievich Sklifosovsky was born on April 6 in 1836 on the Karantin village near the city of Dubossary, Kherson province, now it is the village of Dzerzhinskoe. Some experts argue that Sklifosovsky's place of birth influenced the further choice of his professional and life path.
Innovative scientist, as many researchers call him, Nikolai Sklifosovsky devoted a lot of time to the study of antiseptics (disinfection using chemicals). He published a whole series of works on this topic. He was one of the first to develop a practical method of surgical disinfection, and also began to use local anesthesia with a solution of cocaine, made an apparatus for maintaining anesthesia, and with its help performed a rare operation - truncation of the upper jaw halves. Sklifosovsky made an invaluable contribution to world military field surgery. He personally participated in three wars of that time that allowed him to enrich the practice of this direction. He collected material for a number of scientific publications on military medicine and military sanitary affairs.
