The People's Militia in Pridnestrovie – a temporary armed formation to protect the young republic from the aggression of Moldova by Decree of the President of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic was created on March 17, 1992. The first to join the militia were about 10 thousand people from working militia assistance units formed at Pridnestrovian enterprises back in 1990. Thousands of volunteers of different ages and professions from all over Pridnestrovie joined it subsequently.
The active phase of Moldova’s large-scale aggression against the people of Pridnestrovie began on the night of March 1-2, 1992, when the Chisinau special police squad attacked the city of Dubossary.
Full-scale hostilities began in several directions at once on March 2, 1992. This was the third attempt by the nationalist-minded leadership of Moldova to seize Dubossary and split Pridnestrovie into pieces in its most geographically narrow area.
The militia could significantly change the balance of forces on the front line in a short period of time. Mass entry into the militia gave the war the character of a people's war. The formation of units of the People's Militia took place in conditions of high patriotic enthusiasm, the desire of Pridnestrovians to defend their Motherland with arms in hand.
232 militiamen were killed in the battles for the liberation of Pridnestrovie, more than 200 were wounded, and 12 were missing in 1992. More than 14 thousand militiamen were awarded for their courage the medal “Defender of Pridnestrovie”, 86 people were awarded the Order “For Personal Courage”, including posthumous deaths – 20 people. Forty-five militiamen became holders of the Order of the Republic – the highest state award of Pridnestrovie.
The PMR People's Militia was awarded the “Order of the Republic” by Decree of the President of the PMR Number 151 of March 13, 1997.
Flower laying ceremony took place at the capital's Memorial of Glory today. The memory of the fallen defenders of Pridnestrovie was honored by Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Council Galina Antyufeyeva.
The important role of the People's Militia in the history of the creation and development of the Pridnestrovian state was noted in an address to the residents of the republic by the Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic Alexander Korshunov.
