The people are the source of power

28.11.2020

The people are the source of power in the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic. This is spelled out in the Constitution. The power of the people is expressed through elections. This formula has been in effect in Pridnestrovie since the creation of the republic. Elections to representative bodies of power are held every five years. This year, a single voting day will be held for the second time in the history of Pridnestrovie. Residents will elect deputies to the Supreme Council, city and regional Councils of People's Deputies, village Councils and heads of administrations of villages and townships.

The decision to hold elections on the same day was made by the parliament back in 2014. The Russian experience was taken as a basis; moreover, holding elections on the same day significantly saves budget money.

In the next, seventh convocation of the Supreme Council there will already be 33 deputies, which is ten less than the current composition of the parliament. The number of deputy mandates in the city district councils has also decreased - by 73 compared to the current convocation. The optimization of the number of the deputy corps was initiated by parliamentarians, and last year the Supreme Council adopted the corresponding changes in legislation. The purpose of the solution is also to save budget funds.

Amendments were also made to the Electoral Code. Therefore, this year the election campaign is being held according to new rules. For example, changes have been made on the procedure for using the image of a citizen in campaign materials, on unacceptable methods of campaigning, and other amendments.

The single voting day this year is November 29. Early voting took place from 24 to 28 November in Pridnestrovie. It was organized primarily for those Pridnestrovians who perform state duties on election day and are involved in the operational headquarters authorized by state bodies in the fight against coronavirus infection.

Gloves, masks, disinfectants, social distance, air recirculators are a feature of this year's elections. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, it is important to ensure the safest possible participation of citizens in the electoral process. This task was set by the leadership of the republic.

For the convenience of voters, ballots differ in size and color. Olive - for voting for a deputy of the Supreme Council, lilac - for a deputy of the city district council, green ballot - for a village administration’s head, beige and smaller - for a deputy of the village council.

Due to the decrease in the number of deputies, the circuit of the constituencies has changed. Now the average in the constituency is 12-13 thousand voters. By defining new boundaries of electoral districts, the CEC tried to preserve the old voting places.

45 candidates apply for 33 seats in the Parliament; the average age is 50 years. The youngest candidate is 25 years old. There are 254 candidates for 187 seats for city and regional council deputies. There are 776 candidates for 640 seats in the village councils, and almost 5 people for the heads of villages and townships.

Polling stations on November 29 will be open from 7:00 to 20:00. You can find out where to vote on the website of the Central Election Commission. The service "Find your polling station" determines the location of the polling station on the map and provides information about candidates for deputy.
