The mass event in honor of the Day of the State Flag of the Russian Federation was held in Tiraspol. Representatives of the youth wing of "The Renewal" Republican Party together with representatives of the Union of Russian Communities of Pridnestrovie handed out ribbons in the colors of the national flag of Russia to passers-by. Children, drivers of cars passing by received the white-blue-red ribbons.
Activists of the youth wing of "The Renewal" Republican Party held a small street quiz about the flag of Russia for the townspeople. Passers-by were asked about the symbolism of the colors in the Russian flag, how this state symbol should be treated, and why the Russian flag can be seen so often in our republic along with the Pridnestrovian one.
Tiraspol residents told the youth wing of "The Renewal" Republican Party that the Russian flag is very recognizable and evokes warm feelings. Some of the passers-by shared their knowledge with pleasure: it turns out that the colors of the Russian flag, white, blue and red, are considered pan-Slavic. That is, they are present on the flags of a number of states with a Slavic population.
The Russian state flag has a special attitude in Pridnestrovie; for the inhabitants of our republic, this symbol means among other things the strengthening of Pridnestrovian statehood, integration and historical connection with the Russian Federation and its people, of which Pridnestrovians feel themselves a part.
National Flag Day has been celebrated in Russia on August 22 since 1994, the holiday was established on the basis of a presidential decree. The Russian flag is used on a par with the state flag and is placed on buildings and premises of state institutions in Pridnestrovie, as well as during official events. The PMR adopted a law that stipulates this in 2017.
The white-blue-red flag appeared in Russia during the reign of Peter I. He issued a decree according to which such a flag should have been raised "on all kinds of merchant ships" in 1705. The ruler drew a pattern and determined the order of the horizontal stripes. In May 1883, Emperor Alexander III ordered the use of the white-blue-red flag as a civil flag, and the old black-yellow-white flag to be left as the standard of the imperial family. Emperor Nicholas II made a final decision and ordered "that the flag of white-blue-red should be revered in all cases as the national flag" only in 1896. At the same time, the three colors of the flag received an official interpretation. Red symbolizes sovereignty, blue is the color of the virgin, and white is the color of freedom and independence. In addition, the colors symbolized the commonwealth of White, Little and Great Russia.
Now, another, unofficial interpretation of the meanings of the colors of the Russian flag is most often used. White color means peace, purity, perfection. Blue is the color of faith, fidelity and constancy. Red symbolizes energy, strength, blood shed for the Fatherland.
The events dedicated to the Day of the State Flag of the Russian Federation were also held in other cities of Pridnestrovie today.
