Local councils received the right to protect citizens in the courts

05.04.2023

The Parliament adopted in the second final reading the amendments to the Law of the PMR “On Local Authorities, Local Self-Government and State Administration in the PMR”, which gives the right to city, district and village councils to apply to courts of general jurisdiction to protect the interests of citizens. This norm was previously excluded from the legislative environment, but the decision was made to return it. The initiative was initiated by parliamentarians. The law-in-draft was previously considered by the relevant committee.

The authors of the law-in-draft noted that this norm was introduced primarily to help village councils. The parliamentarians cited as an example the work of the village council and administration in Ternovka, where disputes are ongoing, but it is currently difficult to resolve them without going to court.

The law-in-draft was supported by the deputies unanimously. It will enter into force immediately after signing by the PMR President.
