Cooking competition for blind housewives

The cooking competition took place today at the initiative of parliamentarian Ilona Tyuryaeva as part of the month of the white cane, which takes place in the electoral district Number 28 “Central”. Six completely blind housewives took part in it.

Housewives competed in cutting salads. The battle between the culinary specialists turned out in earnest. First, the contestants drew lots. It determined who would prepare which salad. They chose from the usual and everyone’s favorite vinaigrette, Olivier salad and crab salad.

Each of the six contestants came that day with their own cooking board and a knife that fits comfortably in their hand. Before the start was given, the assistants explained what was located on the table and where. They blind housewives navigated by touch. They laid out the food in the way that was convenient for them and got started. Half an hour was allotted for preparation. The jury members watched how the salads were cut all this time.

The organizers invited a real expert to join the jury. A teacher from the Tiraspol College of Commerce, Vera Bobrova, observed the process from a professional point of view. She judged them as strictly as she did her sighted students.

However, the housewives themselves were happy to share their emotions during the cooking process. One of the contestants, the completely blind Lina Dudar, spoke about her biggest culinary failure. This happened when Lina was 13 years old and she fried potatoes for the first time. The dish came out half-baked, Lina recalls with a laugh. Nowadays, the mother of two children easily copes with cooking and often does not even try ready-made dishes. She knows exactly what happened as it should.

When the command “stop” sounded and the contestants put down their knives, a strict jury got down to business. They judged not only the cutting, but also the presentation of the finished salad.

The jury made its verdict after long discussions: consider each of the six housewives as the winner. All of them were awarded diplomas and memorable gifts. There was a large tasting of the prepared salads then together with the audience.
