Amendments to the law “On burial and funeral business”

29.05.2024

The Supreme Council of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic adopted law-in-draft according to which amendments are made to the law “On burial and funeral affairs” in the first reading.

The law-in-draft provides for the identification of sources of financing for the reburial of the remains of the deceased carried out in violation of current legislation. The reburial of remains is carried out in cases and in the manner established by the government, according to the current PMR Law “On Burial and Funeral Affairs”. Financing is provided In these cases by the relatives of the deceased or other persons who have assumed this responsibility. Funding is provided from local budgets such as the discovery of old war graves in some cases.

However, current regulations do not provide for funding for reburials carried out in violation of the law. The new law-in-draft proposes to supplement Article 7-1 of the Law, establishing that such reburials will be financed from local budgets with the subsequent recovery of costs from persons who violated the law.

The reason for the development of the law-in-draft was an appeal from citizens. Another burial was made at the grave of a veteran of the Great Patriotic War at one of the cemeteries in the city of Bendery. Moreover, the monument to the veteran, which was erected back in Soviet times, was removed and destroyed.

Deputies had questions about the law-in-draft in  the course of the discussion. As part of the preparation of the draft law for the second reading, they will be studied. Amendments to the law legislation in the field of burial are aimed at streamlining the process of burials and reburials and ensuring compliance with the law in the field of funeral business in the republic.
