The PMR Supreme Council Alexander Korshunov and Deputy Chairman, Head of the Committee on Legislation, Protection of Rights and Freedoms of Citizens Galina Antyufeyeva took part in the extended meeting of the Investigative Board of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic. The Investigative Committee Chairman Vyacheslav Brynzar made a report on the activities of the department in 2023.
The crime rate decreased by 12.6% in 2023. Thus, 2709 crimes were registered in the republic last year. This is 389 fewer crimes than in 2022. Accordingly, the number of criminal cases being processed by investigators decreased by 5%.
There was a noticeable increase in the number of cases of fraud, drug smuggling and violations of tax laws last year. There have been fewer serious crimes against life and health at the same time. The number of crimes committed by officials has decreased by 2.5 times compared to 2022 indicators. 41 cases of corruption were registered in 2023, 102 a year earlier.
They also talked in the course of the meeting about the problems that the Investigative Committee faces in its work. One of them is an acute shortage of qualified personnel. The departments are 26% understaffed today. There are 32 vacant positions. Vyacheslav Brynzar noted that almost half of the current staff of the Investigative Committee are young specialists who still lack practical experience.
The length of the investigation remains a big problem. 68% of cases took longer than two months to resolve last year.
At the end of the report, the President of the PMR Vadim Krasnoselsky commented on the achievements and problematic aspects in the activities of the Investigative Committee. The head of state made a number of recommendations aimed at improving it. The work of the Investigative Committee in 2023 was recognized by the President of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic as satisfactory in general.
