Igor Smirnov, “Living according to the law is the basis and strength of the Pridnestrovian people”

The First President of the PMR, Chairman of the Supreme Council of the PMSSR Igor Smirnov gave an interview to the press service of the Parliament after the meeting in the briefing hall of the Supreme Council. Igor Smirnov emphasized that the founder of the Pridnestrovian Republic is the people, and they created it by analogy with the structure of the Soviet Union.

The labor collectives of Pridnestrovie opposed in August 1989 the discriminatory laws of the MSSR on languages, their functioning and the translation of the Moldovan language from Cyrillic to Latin script. The rallies were held in support of the equality of the Moldovan and Russian languages. Referendums were held in Pridnestrovie on the formation of the Pridnestrovian Autonomous SSR as part of the Moldavian SSR in December 1989. The I Extraordinary Congress of Deputies of all levels of Pridnestrovie was held in Parkany on June 2, 1990. The result of its work was the adoption of the declaration "On the socio-economic development of Pridnestrovie." On September 2, the II Extraordinary Congress of Deputies of all levels of Pridnestrovie took place. The delegates voted for the formation of the Pridnestrovian MSSR. The Provisional Supreme Council was formed at the second congress. Its main task was to prepare elections for the first composition of the Pridnestrovian Parliament. The first plenary session of the Supreme Council was held after the elections on November 29, 1990.

Speaking about the path of formation and development of the Supreme Council, Igor Smirnov emphasized that living by the law is the basis and strength of the Pridnestrovian people.
