The hero who lived near us

18.02.2020

Secondary school number 1 in Parkany is named after the Bulgarian poet Atanas Stoev, who worked as a teacher of the Bulgarian language. The school keeps memory of the graduate Pavel Chaban, who died in Afghanistan in 1986, performing international duty. Today, a memorial plaque was opened in the foyer of the school in memory of the hero.

“A kind, sympathetic, loving parents boy,” is how his class teacher Raisa Gradinar recalls Pavel Chaban. The young man left to fight in Afghanistan in October 1985 after graduating from college, but he didn’t return home. Pavel’s mother, Maria Chaban, recalls how she received a letter from her son congratulating her on her anniversary, and soon found out that he died.

Mikhail Katkov donated the book “Afghanistan hurts in my soul” to the library fund of the school, telling about 54 dead soldiers-internationalists. The memory of the fallen heroes was honored with a moment of silence. Fresh flowers lay on the plaque.
