The age of a child who may be with a suspected or accused mother may be increased from 3 to 4 years. Corresponding amendments to the law “On the detention of suspects and accused of committing crimes” were proposed by deputies of the Committee on Legislation, Protection of Rights and Freedoms of Citizens Galina Antyufeyeva, Oleg Petrik and Stepan Stepanov. The law-in-draft was considered at a plenary meeting of the Supreme Council. Deputies adopted the document in the first reading.

Special rooms are equipped for keeping mothers with children in places of deprivation of liberty, as noted Deputy Speaker and co-author of the law-in-draft Galina Antyufeeva and emphasized that it has been proven that when the connection with the child is not lost, the child is not taken away from the mother, she retains maternal feelings.

Children under 4 years of age will be able to stay with their mother in a pre-trial detention center, a temporary detention center for suspects, or stay in a child's home of a correctional institution if the law-in-draft is adopted in final reading. The law-in-draft was developed with the aim of humanizing penal policy, as well as harmonization with the penal legislation of the Russian Federation. The work on the law-in-draft to amend the law “On the detention of suspects and accused of committing crimes” will be continued by the relevant committee.
