Defender of the Fatherland Day

23.02.2023

The leadership of the republic, representatives of state authorities, military personnel and citizens paid tribute to the memory of those who died defending the Motherland at the Memorial of Glory in Tiraspol in different years. The flower-laying ceremony was attended by Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic Alexander Korshunov and Vice Speaker of the Parliament Galina Antyufeeva. She noted that many in Pridnestrovie still remember the days when February 23 was the Day of the Soviet Army and Navy. The holiday is called differently now, but its essence has remained unchanged. This is the day of those who defended, defends and will defend their Fatherland.

The names and surnames of not only the natives of our region on the granite slabs of the capital’s Memorial of Glory, but also fighters from different parts of Russia, the Caucasus, and Asia, who died during the liberation of Moldova from fascist invaders in 1944, are carved. The eternal flame was lit here more than half a century ago. It hasn't faded since then. The tradition to protect the native land at any cost is passed down from generation to generation. The capital's memorial is the burial place of heroes of different times from the Great Patriotic War to the defenders of Pridnestrovie in the early 90s. Their memory was honored with a minute of silence. Fresh flowers were laid after that at the Eternal Flame by the PMR President, the speaker of Parliament, deputies of the Supreme Council and the leadership of the capital.

Respect for the history and deeds of fathers, grandfathers and great-grandfathers, responsibility for the fate of the Motherland – this is the real service to the Fatherland. Therefore, this holiday is celebrated on such a large scale and congratulated not only those who wear shoulder straps, but also future defenders of the Fatherland in our republic. Speaker Alexander Korshunov noted that February 23 is a day of military glory for each of us, a symbol of courage and heroism, the day that reminds us of our own history and makes us proud of our ancestors.

Fresh flowers lay at all Memorials of Glory in Pridnestrovie today. The flower-laying ceremonies were attended by parliamentarians in their constituencies.
