Memorial Day in Dubossary

20.05.2022

May 20, 1992 is one of the darkest days in the history of Dubossary. 13 defenders of Pridnestrovie died at once in the area of the Dubossary dam this day 30 years ago. This is the largest loss in a day in the history of the armed conflict in the city.

The battle on the banks of the Dniester went on for almost a day. The armed formations of Moldova made another attempt to take Dubossary.

“May 1992 turned out to be hot in the literal and figurative sense of the word. The defenders of Pridnestrovie managed to hold back the onslaught of the enemy and defend their native city. Both the defenders of Pridnestrovie and civilians were killed. All types of weapons were used against the Dubossary people, including artillery and various kinds of heavy small arms. Our defenders were killed. This is a tragedy. But it would be even more tragic if their deaths were in vain. Their feat is not in vain. They died for their homeland, for their people and for the future recognition of Pridnestrovie. Their names will forever remain in the memory of the multinational people of Pridnestrovie, blessed memory of the dead. God bless the defenders of Pridnestrovie. I wish everyone health and peace, peace for Pridnestrovie”, said the President of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic Vadim Krasnoselsky, speaking to the residents of the city at the Memorial of Glory.

Dubossary lost 39 people in May 1992. Fifteen of them are civilians. The whole month there was an intensive shelling of the city. Fire was fired at residential buildings, enterprises, kindergartens and schools. There was a mass evacuation of the population in the city. The memory of each deceased today was honored with a minute of silence at the Memorial of Glory, where 30 defenders of Pridnestrovie are buried.

“May 20 is one of those dates that are inscribed in the chronicles of our state with blood. Dubossary lost their defenders then. The fighters who defended the city in those days were from all over Pridnestrovie. Each of them defended not only Dubossary, the civilian population, but also our entire young republic. Eternal memory to the dead, peace and tranquility to the Pridnestrovian land,” said Alexander Korshunov, Chairman of the Pridnestrovian Supreme Council.

After a minute of silence, fresh flowers laid down at the graves of the fallen defenders of Pridnestrovie. They recalled in the course of the rally today what May 1992 was like for Dubossary. The city was constantly shelled. There were funerals almost every day. Deputy of the Supreme Council of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic in the constituency number 11 "Central" Boris German said, that he lost several of his school friends on May 20.

The fiercest fighting in May 1992 took place near the dam, near the fortified area "Meteorological station-dam of the Dubossary hydroelectric power station". Soldiers of the Republican Guard who decided to break through under the incessant shelling of the enemy at his position in order to help the scouts who were in an ambush died during its defense on the 20th of May, 30 years ago. Among those dead was Yuri Boytsov – the elder brother of the current employee of the Office of the Supreme Council of the PMR Svetlana Privalova.

A small memorial sign was built at the site of the death of the crew of the armored personnel carrier and the guardsmen who rushed to their aid. Eyewitnesses of those events and relatives of the victims come to him every year, to remember those who, at the cost of their lives, prevented the capture of Dubossary and defended all of Pridnestrovie.
