The Declaration of Independence of Pridnestrovie is 31

25.08.2022

31 years ago, on August 25, 1991, important date in the history of the republic, the Supreme Council of the PMSSR adopted the Declaration of Independence of Pridnestrovie. The deputies of the young republic wanted to create all the necessary conditions for a peaceful and calm separation from the Republic of Moldova, without bloodshed, destruction and death among the population. That is what the adoption of the Declaration was aimed at.

The document was accepted in emergency conditions. As eyewitnesses of those events noted in their memoirs, after the August military coup in Moscow, the Moldovan leadership decided to take advantage of the situation and proclaim the Pridnestrovians as adherents of the conservative course in the Soviet Union, and convey this to the Russian leadership. Operation "Nevod" was developed in order to try to arrest the most active Pridnestrovian deputies, leaders of the republic and take them to Chisinau. It was decided in these difficult conditions to gather deputies of the Supreme Council of the PMSSR and proclaim the independence of Pridnestrovie.

A plenary session was held on August 25, 1991. The deputies did not gather in the House of Soviets, but in the basement office of the civil defense of the Tochlitmash plant named after Kirov due to pressure from the official authorities of Moldova. The first Pridnestrovian parliamentarians unanimously supported the document that determined the path of development of our state.

The Declaration of Independence of Pridnestrovie was adopted two days earlier than the Moldovan one. The document enabled the authorities of the young republic, pursuing an independent foreign policy, to refer to the will of their people and the legislature.

A referendum on independence and the election of the first President took place in Pridnestrovie on December 1, 1991. Igor Smirnov was elected. Almost 98% of the inhabitants of the republic voted for the independence of our state more than 30 years ago.
