35 years after the man-made disaster in Chernobyl

26.04.2021

1837 residents of the cities and districts of Pridnestrovie participated in the elimination of the consequences of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The tragedy of April 26, 1986 near the Ukrainian Pripyat became a symbol of the largest man-made disaster in the history of mankind. 12 regions of Ukraine and 19 regions of Russia, as well as Belarus, were exposed to radiation pollution. Together with other liquidators from the entire Soviet Union (there were more than 600 thousand people), Pridnestrovians extinguished fires and cleared the territory from radioactive fragments, built a sarcophagus over the destroyed fourth power unit and blocked the release of radioactive substances into the environment. The liquidators received large doses of radiation, many of them died because of radiation sickness, for most of them cancer was the consequence.

Today, on the 35th anniversary of the man-made disaster, the memory of the dead and deceased liquidators is honored all over the world. The President of the PMR Vadim Krasnoselsky, on behalf of the Pridnestrovian people, laid flowers at the monument to the liquidators of the consequences of the technogenic catastrophe at the Memorial of Glory. It was installed 2 years ago on the initiative of the Tiraspol association "Chernobyl" and with the support and direct participation of the President. The first President of the PMR Igor Smirnov, Chairman of the Supreme Council of the PMR Alexander Korshunov and Vice Speaker Galina Antyufeyeva, the leadership of the Government and state authorities and administration, public activists, liquidators and family members of those who gave their lives to save humanity from an invisible enemy, the press service of the PMR President reports.
