In mid-February, the legislature received a package of legislations, aimed at optimizing the number of deputies at all levels. The legislative initiative, proposed by 21 parliamentarians, involves amending the Constitution, the law “On the Regulations of the Supreme Council” and the Electoral Code. The conceptual task of the legislations is rationalization, including the reduction of consolidated budget expenditures on the functioning of the legislative and representative bodies of power.
The head of the legislature is the co-author of a package of legislation. Alexander Korshunov expressed confidence that optimization of the number of deputies will not affect the quality of the performance of the representative function. Currently, the Central Election Commission is conducting preliminary work to find the best options for the formation of constituencies. It is assumed that the electoral base (the territory of the electoral district and the number of voters) for each deputy of the Supreme Council will increase. If the proposed changes are accepted, none of the voters will be forgotten, the speaker assured.
If the package of legislation aimed at optimizing the number of deputies will be adopted soon, the changes will take effect in the next electoral cycle. According to the new system, deputies will be elected in 2020. Currently, the total number of deputies, including deputies of local councils, is 1155.
