The 79th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War

09.05.2024

The 79th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War was celebrated today in Pridnestrovie. A solemn ceremony of laying flowers was held in memory of the soldiers who fell in battles with the Nazis for their Motherland at the capital's Memorial of Glory in the morning. Red carnations lay at the Eternal Flame and granite slabs of mass graves, on which the names of the liberating heroes are carved.

The festive event was attended by the President of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic Vadim Krasnoselsky, the PMR Supreme Council Chairman Alexander Korshunov, the PMR Government Chairman Alexander Rosenberg, representatives of the deputy corps, heads of ministries and departments, clergy and social activists.

The President of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic Vadim Krasnoselsky spoke in a conversation with journalists today about how important it is to preserve historical memory for future generations.

“Our common task, including mine as President, as a father, is to raise children, grandchildren, all people in memory, in gratitude of the feat of the Soviet soldier, the Soviet people, with an understanding of what really happened. Disasters happen when they forget. We are witnessing it today, unfortunately. Pridnestrovie has a peculiarity. People are used to telling the truth here – in schools, kindergartens, other educational institutions, and in communicating with people. This truth probably gives us the opportunity to remember, study this history, and be grateful. That's the whole answer“, the PMR President emphasized.

The Victory Banner was raised during the anthem of the Soviet Union after the flower-laying ceremony on Suvorov Square. This is an exact copy of the assault flag of the 150th Idritsa Rifle Division, which on April 30, 1945, Red Army soldiers Alexei Berest, Mikhail Egorov and Meliton Kantaria hoisted on the Reichstag building in Berlin.

Great Patriotic War 1941-1945 in terms of the scale of battles, the number of victims and the degree of material damage, it is the most destructive in the history of mankind. All peoples of the Soviet Union participated in the battle against fascism. Natives of the Pridnestrovian land together with their compatriots fought, resisted, survived, and won. About 20 thousand of our fellow countrymen died on the fronts – combat, underground and partisan.

Many residents of Tiraspol came to the Memorial of Glory today with portraits of their grandfathers and great-grandfathers - participants in the Great Patriotic War.
