A solemn meeting dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the formation of the Union of Journalists of Pridnestrovie was held in Tiraspol. Employees of newspapers, radio, television, news agencies, and writers gathered at the Palace of the Republic. The organization consists of more than 100 people totally.
It was decided to create an association of journalists on May 21, 1994 at the founding congress of representatives of the PMR mass media. One of its participants was Andrei Safonov. Deputy of the Supreme Council noted 30 years later congratulating journalists on their anniversary that the work of journalists in the early 1990s made it possible to break through the ring of information blockade into which the Moldovan authorities sought to drive Pridnestrovie.
The parliamentarian read out the welcoming address of the Chairman of the Supreme Council Alexander Korshunov. In his congratulations, the speaker noted that today a large number of modern media outlets are developing and actively functioning.
Pridnestrovian journalism dates back to the late 1980s, when the newsletter “Tiraspol on Strike” appeared. The publication became the mouthpiece of the United Council of Labor Collectives of Tiraspol. The strikes of Pridnestrovian enterprises protesting against discriminatory language laws were covered. It was noted at the event that resistance of Pridnestrovie to nationalism became known in all parts of the Soviet Union thanks to this. The First President of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic Igor Smirnov reminded those present that the press played one of the most important roles in the restoration of the republic.
They talked at the ceremonial meeting about the tasks of the Union this is assistance first of all in the professional growth of journalists, in the popularization of this profession, the publication of books and collections. For example, there is a school for young journalists; lectures, master classes, and meetings with press representatives are held for schoolchildren and students. The Union of Journalists holds creative competitions.
A special cancellation was held for a stamp depicting the picturesque Dniester valley near the village of Rogi, Dubossary district in honor of the 30th anniversary. The First President of the PMR Igor Smirnov took part in the special cancellation.
