The 30th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence of Pridnestrovie

25.08.2021

On August 25, 1991, 30 years ago the Supreme Council of the PMSSR adopted one of the most important documents of the republic - the Declaration on the Independence of Pridnestrovie. Then the session was held under great pressure from the Moldovan authorities. The plenary session was held not in the House of Soviets, as usual, but for the sake of safety, in the basement office of the civil defense of the plant named after Kirov. The first Pridnestrovian deputies unanimously supported the document, which determined the path of development of our state. One of the authors of the document, Deputy Chairman of the Advisory Assembly of the first Pridnestrovian deputies Anna Volkova and Deputy of the Supreme Council of the VII convocation Andrei Safonov (in 1991 he headed the republican Department of Public Education and Culture ).

Anna Volkova is one of the first deputies of Pridnestrovie, she stood at the origins of the creation of our republic. She not only defended the sovereignty of Pridnestrovie, but today, together with other members of the Advisory Assembly of the first deputies, takes an active part in the life of the state, regularly discussing important events for the republic.

In the context of the beginning of the arrests and seizures of the deputies, it was decided to gather the deputies of the Supreme Council and proclaim the independence of Pridnestrovie. We chose the day of August 25, said one of the authors of the document.

The declaration of independence of Pridnestrovie pursued only one goal - to try to create all the necessary conditions for a peaceful and calm separation from the Republic of Moldova. This meant - to prevent bloodshed, destruction and death of civilians.

A few months later, referendum on the independence of Pridnestrovie and the election of the first president took place on December 1, 1991. Almost 98% of the republic's residents voted for the independence of our state. Igor Nikolaevich Smirnov was elected President of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic.
