The capital of Pridnestrovie celebrates its 226th birthday. It traditionally coincides with the great Orthodox feast of the Protection of the Most Holy Mother of God. The celebrations began in the morning. The festive service in the Church of Intercession was held by the Archbishop of Tiraspol and Dubossary Savva. Together with parishioners, it was visited by the Chairman of the Supreme Council Alexander Shcherba, the first President of the PMR Igor Smirnov, and representatives of the government and the city authorities.
At the end of the service, a solemn ceremony was held to extinguish a postage stamp issued in honor of the 220th anniversary of the day of the illumination of the throne of the Intercession Church of the Russian Orthodox Church. The right to make the first print of a new postage stamp was granted by the Speaker of the Parliament Alexander Shcherba.
The main temple of Tiraspol was built in 1795 in the center of the city, where today is the city Palace of Culture. The church was destroyed in 1934, and a new one was built at the end of the 20th century. In 1998, when the City Day began to be celebrated on October 14, on Pokrova, the tradition of a big religious procession was revived. Every year it passes from the new Pokrovskaya church to the main square of the capital. This year, the procession ended at the chapel erected at the site of the destroyed Pokrovskaya Church, where its solemn consecration took place.
Festivities in honor of the capital's birthday took place on Suvorov Square and the city embankment, from the large installation of the House of Soviets symbolizing the gates to the Palace of Children's and Youth Creativity. Atmosphere of the holiday charged the head of the legislature. He congratulated residents of Tiraspol and shared his impressions about the city.
The organizers of the holiday prepared a lot of surprises for citizens. Great popularity among children enjoyed the exhibition of special equipment and photo zones with different fairy-tale characters. Adults could visit the fair of honey and fruit, exhibitions of local artists and the feast of young wine. Celebrations continued with a festive concert.
