The Government proposed to make amendments and additions to the law “On the social protection of citizens affected by the Chernobyl disaster and other radiation or man-made disasters”. The proposed standards will allow citizens to continue to receive compensation for damage caused to health due to radiation exposure due to the disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in the event of an old-age or long-service pension.
They do not have such an opportunity currently, according to current regulations. They retain the right to compensation for health damage only if they receive a disability pension. When citizens can receive two pensions - for age and for disability, they lose the right to payment of compensation for harm to health.
The Committee on Social Policy and Healthcare will recommend adopting the law-in-draft in two readings at once at one of the next plenary meetings.
According to preliminary calculations, the proposed standards will apply to 9 people – disabled people of group III, who could potentially go on an old-age pension. If the law-in-draft is adopted in final reading, the new norms will come into force on January 1, 2024.
