The Criminal Code Amendments

Комитет по законодательству, правоохранительным органам, обороне, безопасности, миротворческой деятельности, защите прав и свобод граждан

20.10.2022

The PMR Prosecutor sent to the Supreme Council the law-in-draft that strengthens the criminal liability for drivers who drive a car while intoxicated and have previously been held liable for “drunk” driving or have a criminal record for it. Anatoly Guretsky notes in an explanation of the initiative that driving while intoxicated is a great danger to society. The number of crimes committed repeatedly by persons who already have a criminal record for them does not decrease.

The law-in-draft proposes to introduce a more severe punishment for “malicious” violators: to establish a term of imprisonment of up to 3 years and increase the fine to 500 minimum wages. Correctional labor for up to 2 years will be provided as an alternative punishment. The offender may be deprived of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for up to 6 years instead of the established period of up to 3 years at the same time.

The Committee Chairman Galina Antyufeeva noted in the course of the meeting that similar norms are in force in Russian legislation. The deputies supported the legislative initiative of the PMR Prosecutor. Amendments to the Criminal Code will be considered in the first reading at one of the plenary sessions.
