23.02.2025

The Day of the Defender of the Fatherland – a holiday of valor, devotion and courage, respect for the history of their country and its heroes is celebrated in the countries of the post-Soviet space on the 23rd of February. This holiday has existed for more than a century under different names. It was established initially in honor of the creation of the Red Army and was associated with the courage and selflessness of Soviet soldiers. It acquired particular importance during the Great Patriotic War. The defenders of the homeland of different historical periods are traditionally remembered on February 23 today.

The Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic Alexander Korshunov congratulated Veterans of the Great Patriotic War, internationalists, defenders of Pridnestrovie, soldiers and officers of the Armed Forces on Defender of the Fatherland Day.

The desire to preserve peace and prosperity in the republic, to protect it from an external enemy always united our multinational, friendly people, noted Alexander Korshunov.

According to tradition, Pridnestrovians in all cities and regions of the republic pay tribute to the heroes who died, protecting their homeland on February 23, the day of the defender of the Fatherland. Commemorative events were held at the Glory memorial in Tiraspol. The first persons of the state took part in them, including the chairman of the Supreme Council of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic Alexander Korshunov and the chairman of the parliamentary committee on education, public associations and the media Igor Buga. The memory of the dead defenders of the Fatherland was honored with a minute of silence, after which fresh flowers lay down to the eternal fire, to monuments and grave plates with the names of the fallen defenders.

The main commemorative events of the republic are traditionally celebrated at the capital's memorial of fame. The day of the defender of the Fatherland was no exception. It is symbolic that the grand opening of this memorial complex took place on this day, February 23, 1972. The ceremony of reburial of the remains of Soviet soldiers and officers - natives of our region who fell in the fields of World War II, as well as fighters who died during the liberation of Pridnestrovie, was held on the same day. Several reconstructions have been carried out at the Memorial of Glory since then. Large-scale work is underway today.

7 granite plates have been already installed. The names of 1353 residents of Tiraspol who died on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War are carved and the episodes of key battles are depicted on six of them. The seventh central plate will become a monument to an unknown soldier with real burials. The remains will be postponed on April 12, the day of the liberation of Tiraspol from the Nazi invaders. The design will be the same as the monument erected in Moscow on Poklonnaya Gora.

The wall of memory and the cup of eternal fire will be restored. The reconstruction will finally be completed by May 9 – the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War.
