The world-famous surgeon Nikolai Vasilievich Sklifosovsky was born on April 6 in 1836 on the Karantin village near the city of Dubossary, Kherson province, now it is the village of Dzerzhinskoe. He published a whole series of works on this topic. He was one of the first to develop a practical method of surgical disinfection, and also began to use local anesthesia with a solution of cocaine, made an apparatus for maintaining anesthesia, and with its help performed a rare operation - truncation of the upper jaw halves. Sklifosovsky made an invaluable contribution to world military field surgery. He personally participated in three wars of that time that allowed him to enrich the practice of this direction. He collected material for a number of scientific publications on military medicine and military sanitary affairs.

Another interesting fact from the biography of the scientist is that the first independent practice of Nikolai Sklifosovsky took place in his hometown. He served as the chief physician of the Dubossary hospital located in Pochtovaya Street two weeks. Now it is Lenin Street. Sklifosovsky's great contribution to the organization and construction of new university surgical clinics in Moscow on Devichye Pole. He also promoted rural medicine. Medical posts were built in Russian villages on his initiative.

Pridnestrovie is developing medicine, including rural medicine. This is one of the main tasks of the state. Rural feldsher-obstetric stations and medical outpatient clinics are being restored throughout the republic. Money for these purposes is allocated from the capital investment fund.

The Chairman of the PMR Supreme Council noted that the state pays special attention to the health care system. It is important that the Pridnestrovian medicine goes to the modern level and the residents of the republic receive high-quality medical care.

One of the streets bears his name in Dubossary, the homeland of the outstanding scientist and doctor. The Sheremetyevsky hospital in Moscow was renamed the Nikolai Sklifosovsky Institute of Emergency Medicine. A monument to him was erected in Poltava. The city hospital in Odessa, where the great surgeon worked, survived, and the building of the 2nd men's gymnasium, where he studied, survived.
